About me

blaues Abendkleid

Pianist Barbara Scherbel, originally from Kronach (Northern Bavaria), began her piano studies with Wendelin Treutlein and Prof. Erich Appel (Nuremberg). Just three years after her first piano lessons, she won her first competition – the start of an impressive series of awards: five national prizes at "Jugend musiziert" (Youth Makes Music), a prize at the "Grotrian-Steinweg" competition, at the "Nuremberg Piano Competition" and at the international piano competition "Concours de l'Eurorégion" in Lille, France.

She made her orchestral debut at the age of only twelve. Early on, she received a scholarship from the German Foundation for Musical Life and participated in international piano masterclasses with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Arne Torger, Rudolf Kehrer, and Toshio Hosokawa, and recorded works by Ravel for Bavarian Radio. She studied piano with Prof. Franz Massinger (University of Music and Performing Arts Munich) and Prof. Wolfgang Manz (Nuremberg University of Music), and studied song with Prof. Helmut Deutsch.

As a soloist, she has performed with the Hof Symphony Orchestra, the Vogtland Philharmonic, the Free State Orchestra of Bavaria and the Munich Symphony Orchestra.

As a chamber musician, she is in demand for a wide variety of ensembles: she is a sought-after accompanist for choirs and singers, and gives concerts with piano duos, piano trios, recitals, and duo recitals with flute, violin, and cello. Concert tours have taken her beyond the German-speaking world to Lisbon and Paris. Most recently, she accepted an invitation from Central German Radio (MDR) to accompany the MDR Children's Choir on a concert tour through eastern Germany.

Barbara Scherbel is a lecturer at the Institute for Music Education at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich and a répétiteur at the humanistic Wittelsbacher Gymnasium in Munich.

She lives in Munich with her husband and their three sons.
